Social impact accounting

Imagine a world where financial performance and social impact were understood together.

Good Numbers brings accounting thinking and social impact thinking into the same conversation — so organisations can become stronger, make better decisions and create more sustainable impact.

The emerging field

Accounting for more than money.

Traditional accounting explains the financial activity. Social impact accounting asks what those resources achieved — and brings both views into the way an organisation learns, decides and reports.

01

Accounting thinking

How strong is the organisation?

  • £ What came in — and what went out?
  • ↗ Are we making a profit or surplus?
  • ◎ Can we sustain what we are building?
02

Social impact thinking

What difference is it actually making?

  • Δ What changed — and for whom?
  • ● What evidence do we have?
  • → What should we learn and do next?

Not one magic impact number. A more complete picture built from financial information, outcomes, evidence, learning and human experience.

The connection

Strong numbers are not the mission.

But they help make the mission possible.

  1. 01Stronger numbersClarity about income, costs, cash and performance.
  2. 02Stronger organisationsBetter decisions and greater financial resilience.
  3. 03More sustainable impactMore capacity to keep creating meaningful change.

For charities

Money matters
because mission matters.

Charities exist to make a difference. Their reporting should help people understand what that difference actually was.

Charities SORP 2026 strengthens the direction of travel: beyond listing activity and expenditure, towards clearer reporting of achievements, outcomes and impact. We can help you build the evidence, thinking and narrative behind that report — proportionately and credibly.

The strongest report is the result of useful measurement and learning throughout the year — not an archaeological dig through twelve months of spreadsheets.

For charities: we typically work alongside your existing accountant, auditor, independent examiner or finance team.

For accounting firms: we add impact measurement, evidence and narrative capability while you retain the core client relationship.

Helping define the field

This did not begin when SORP changed.

In 2024, Marcus wrote about the rise of the Social Impact Accountant and asked what accounting could become when financial performance is only part of the story.

The field is still emerging. We do not pretend to have invented a universally accepted profession. But we have been thinking about its purpose, language, standards and possibilities for years — and we want to help shape what good practice looks like.
